WHEN EVERYTHING ELSE HAS FAILED

THE TRUTH

WILL SHOW THE WAY

The Institute of Purpose is a groundbreaking organization dedicated to helping individuals from all walks of life discover and embrace their unique purpose. The spirit of the institute is oriented toward creating a world where everyone is empowered to pursue their passions and contribute to the greater good, leading to a more fulfilled and harmonious society.

Founded in 2022 by Ed Nissen, the Institute of Purpose started out as a curiosity with why innumerable therapy clients were arriving at a place of healing only to find themselves yearning for a sense of purpose. This curiosity evolved into an idea that took hold of Ed. He began to realize that people often lack that critical sense of purpose that is needed to drive us toward meaningful goals and to make life worth living. But he also saw that it is possible, through care and intellectual exploration, to help people discover that elusive purpose and meaning. As a result and through a painstaking endeavor, an Institute has been formed for the purpose of gathering data on the self-reported changes in coaching and psychotherapy clients’ sense of purpose, performing analyses on the language around purpose that is consistent through cross-cultural lines, and to develop, among other things, a psychometrically valid way to reliably measure the degree to which an individual or group experiences a sense of purpose.

Our Mission

The Institute of Purpose is dedicated to revolutionizing the way individuals and organizations discover a sense of purpose by relentlessly seeking the truth and fostering thoughtful, open communication. We aim to develop and disseminate a universal formula for discovering purpose, adaptable to the unique needs of each individual, while maintaining the highest standards of integrity and thoughtfulness.

Our Vision

Our vision is to be the world's leading authority on purpose and its cultivation by creating a global community that embraces the pursuit of truth and the exploration of purpose. We envision a world where individuals, businesses, and institutions are empowered with the knowledge and tools to live and work purposefully, ultimately contributing to the collective well-being and the betterment of society.

The Meaning & Symbolism of our Logo

The Institute of Purpose's logo is a thoughtfully crafted symbol, combining three elements that represent profound psychological concepts: the opposing crescent moons, the tree, and the arrow. The logo artfully incorporates these three elements to create a powerful visual representation of the complex psychological concepts that underpin the Institute's mission and approach to personal growth and development. Through the integration of Jung's wisdom, the etymology of the word "sin," and Neumann's exploration of the Great Mother archetype, the logo serves as a constant reminder of the depth and richness of the human experience and the transformative power of self-awareness and growth.

Drawing inspiration from Jungian psychology, the tree embodies the full spectrum of one's being, with roots symbolizing the darker aspects of the psyche and branches reaching toward higher ideals. This imagery is based on Carl Gustav Jung's quote, "No tree, it is said, can grow to heaven unless its roots reach down to hell," which emphasizes the necessity of embracing both positive and negative aspects of the self to achieve growth and self-realization.

The arrow signifies the aim for truth, cutting through the tree and underlining the importance of balancing chaos and order in the pursuit of truth. The concept of "sin" as "missing the mark" is derived from its translation in biblical Greek and Hebrew texts, which suggests that it is not necessarily an intentional act of disobedience or evil but rather a failure to meet a specific standard or expectation. This understanding of sin emphasizes the importance of striving for moral and spiritual growth while recognizing that humans are imperfect and prone to making mistakes.

The opposing crescent moons represent the dual nature of the Great Mother archetype as explored by Erich Neumann in his book, "The Great Mother." These crescents symbolize the contrasting qualities of the Great Mother: the light crescent embodies her nurturing, life-giving aspects, while the dark crescent signifies her destructive, devouring qualities. Neumann used the symbolism of the "two opposing crescent moons" to illustrate the inherent complexity of the feminine archetype. The dual aspects of the Great Mother exist simultaneously and are inseparable, reflecting the broader theme of polarity in human psychology and mythology. In his work, Neumann emphasized the importance of recognizing and integrating these opposing aspects of the feminine archetype, as well as the archetypes in general, for achieving psychological growth and balance.
